Bad Music Video Project

This movie gave me motivation to do my laundry and on the plus side doing my laundry and cleaning up was my homework! Also, once I was done cleaning i figured it'd be a good idea to relax by pampering myself!

Jessica Hische

In class on Wednesday, October 27th, we listened to a lecture by Jessica Hische.  She graduated from Tyler in 2006 and works with typography and illustration.  Her success is mostly from her typography.  Also, she is working on her 12th alphabet of type that she does for fun in her free time.  I really enjoyed this lecture.  Jessica's life sound very busy, but it pays off because her work is amazing.  I loved her text pieces and it makes me want to try it out as soon as possible.  I want to major in graphic design and work mostly as an illustrator.  I illustrated a children's book this summer and I liked it a lot.  Jessica's input on working hard and how to get through the 4 years at Tyler really helped.  If I can do something like Jessica's work for a living I would be eternally happy.

Lecture - October 26th

The speaker this week was Ben Volta, who is an artist living in Philadelphia.  He has a studio with eight other people at a complex or school gym, which has other levels of rooms and spaces.  He works with public school teachers by helping them link art to learning.  This summer he created a mural project where he helped artists of all ages from the City of Philadelphia Murals Art Program create a huge mural, photographed above.  These patterns represent consumption, loss, and memory.  Most of his projects deal with learning, life skill development, and creativity.  I found his projects to be very inspiring and a good life experience.  It would be great to be involved in one of these projects for a summer.

Lecture - October 19th

John Thompson spoke about how he created architectural structures, but only sections of a complete structure.  He started out as a carpenter and now does architectural pieces.  Also, his studio is in the basement of his grandfather's bakery.  In his studio he likes to be alone to focus and create/make.  His art seemed very interesting to me especially how he would only take a section of a piece of architecture to recreate.

Lecture- Oct. 5th

At the lecture this week, Doug Bucci spoke to us. About 6 years ago Doug wanted to be a painter. Now he has almost completed or already completed a degree in metals and a master of fine arts at Tyler.  Also, he has taught metalsmithing at Tyler.  He has diabetes and he brings that into his art. A lot of his work is influenced by his diabetes.  For instance, he made an emergency insulin kit as a piece of art.  I think it's really aspiring that he uses his diabetes in his artwork.  Your are is you and everypart of you should be portrayed in your art in my opinion.
I found this picture of jewelry Doug made on his website, I found it very interesting i love the movement.

In computer class we squished our faces against the copier and used that photo as a reference to create an image on adobe illustrator.  We could only use the pen tool and colors. This is me!

TED TALK

The video i watched was Mechai Viravaidya: How Mr. Condom Made Thailand a Better Place.  This video was posted September 2010.  Mr. Condom walks us through Thailand's plan to raise its standard of living.  Before this movement there were 7 children per family on average.  Thailand persuades women to go on the pill.  The teachers were having condom blowing contests and there was school condom competitions.  The condom soon became a girls best friend.  The average children per home went from 7 to 1.5 and population growth went from 3.3% to 0.5%.  Then Thailand got AIDS.  AIDS education spread through the country and everyone was involved. Captain Condom was their symbol or protection.  Condoms were distributed everywhere.  Soon taxi drivers were distributing condoms and even the police were giving out condoms.  HIV then declined 90%.

Lecture - Sept 28th

At the lecture on Tuesday, Marianne Dages, a book artist and printmaker, talked to us about her work.  As a freshman she enrolled in University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she majored in photography.  After she graduated she didn't know what she wanted to do with photography, but she did know she wanted to find a studio to herself to immerse herself in her art.  She went a school in North Carolina in the mountains near Ashville. At this school there wasn't much to do so you just concentrate on work all the time and she developed her first studio here.  I really liked her book binding and each was one of a kind.

Lecture - Sept 21st

Candy Depew was the speaker at the lecture on Tuesday. She was born in Cleveland and got her BFA at Kent State University in ceramics, jewelry/metals, drawing and cultural anthropology.  To earn her MFA she enrolled in Tyler School of Art.  She travels around the world to research the decorative arts, ornamental prints, and museum collections.  Also, she showed us clips of her t-shirt designs and jewelry.  This lecture was very interesting and I loved Candy's artwork.

Our assignment was to make three text art pieces in the categories of abstract, representational, and expressive.  The Live, Love piece is my abstract, the face with the curly hair is my representational and the one with the song lyrics to Comfortable by John Mayer is my expressive piece.

Lecture - Sept 14th

The lecture last Tuesday was done by Peter Hanley. He had an interesting discussion about studios. Sadly, he does not have a studio of his own, but he does have a computer. Also, he discussed how all artists have studios in their heads, everything an artist does starts in their mind. This is very philosophical and very true. Everything I produce as an artist came from my mind, I ponder about a piece of artwork I want to compose and then I take that image from my head and put it on paper.  Sometimes art can be impulsive and you just run with no idea in mind, but the idea had to of been in your unconscious or it could have formulated while you are in the process of that piece of art. His lecture was very interesting and made me think a lot about the steps I take to produce art.

Videos from Class

The videos from class last wednesday were very interesting. I never thought someone would actually take one of my photos from facebook or myspace and put in on a billboard. When becoming a member of facebook and myspace I knew that it is possible for people to steal your photos or drawings, but I never thought it completely through. It's one of those things I thought "That would never happen to me." I think if you are willing to take a photo and put it up on the internet then its fair game for the media or anyone else to take that photo. That's a horrible situation, but you have to know the coinsequences of putting pictures on the web. In the case with the girl who's picture was on the billboard, I feel that the cell phone company didn't do anything legally wrong. It's unethically to take a random person's photo without their concent, but that's just how the world works, not everything is fair.

Professor Glahn

At the lecture held in Tyler last wednesday Professor Glahn, the Assisstant Professor of Critical Studies and Aesthetics specializing in contemporary art history and theory, spoke to us about Bauhaus Art. This school affirmed innovative training methods and a place of production, which brought together some awesome contemporary architects and artists. Bauhaus had a big influence in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and tpography.  I found this type of art to be very interesting and unique.

Life in the City

Well today I took a trip into the city with my roomie and we had such a good time! The subway was a little difficult to figure out, but luckily we didn't get lost! We got off the subway at City Hall which is such a beautiful placde. The architechture was so amazing I really admire it. We walked around just enjoying the scenery while taking pictures. Also, we ate a FIVE GUYS for the first time. The french fries were so so good. I love the city and the atmosphere, its very excited and there is never a dull moment. I want to see much more of the city this entire year! This was such an awesome project, it gave me an excuse to go into the city and explore!
